Urological Surgeon - Mr A W Thomas

Urological Surgeon - Mr A W Thomas FRCS (Urol)

Profile: Mr Alun Thomas was appointed as Consultant Urological Surgeon in Newport in 2005. He undertook his undergraduate studies at St. Thomas’ Hospital and Guy’s Hospital, London, graduating in 1991. This period included a twelve month period of surgical research funded by a competitively won scholarship from The Medical Research Council in 1987. Following graduation, he pursued his surgical training both in London and subsequently the South-West of England, culminating in two years at The Bristol Urological Institute, finishing in 2004. He was awarded his Fellowship in Urological Surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons in London in 2003. In recognition of his contribution to urological research, he was appointed as The Hunterian Professor of Surgery to the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2004. Mr Thomas has researched and published widely on the urological conditions that he deals with on a daily basis. He has written many original articles, published in peer reviewed journals, and also book chapters, and has presented his work both nationally and internationally on numerous occasions. Most recently he presented well-received work undertaken in Newport, at the International Continence Society meeting hosted in Toronto, Canada. The work presented examined the use of Botox in the management of urinary incontinence in women. Since his arrival in South-East Wales, he has established the local services of urethral reconstruction for stricture disease, the use of Botox for urinary incontinence and implantation of the Artificial Urinary Sphincter for incontinence in men. Mr Thomas is married with two children. His wife is one of our local Gynaecological Surgeons.

Speciality: As well as dealing with a wide array of common urological problems, he has particular sub-specialist interests in the management of urological stone disease, lower urinary tract dysfunction (prostate disorders and urinary incontinence in both men and women) and erection problems (erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s Disease).
